Press Release

The GameCamp Berlin (#gcberlin) is the annual meeting of game experts in Germany's “Games Capital” Berlin.

The GameCamp Berlin was originally founded under the label “researching games BarCamp” as a network meeting for the scientific research of digital games and was aimed primarily at junior academics.

Since the kick-off in Wiesbaden in 2011, we have succeeded in connecting researchers from a wide range of disciplines - computer science, media studies, education, engineering, literary science, psychology, business administration, medicine, sociology, mathematics, law, religious studies and more –  and developing an active and interdisciplinary dialogue even beyond the event itself. In 2012 and 2013, we firmly anchored the BarCamp in the academic community and welcomed a total of 250 participants from over 20 cities and 4 European countries. In 2016, the BarCamp finally moved to Berlin and took place as an official partner of the “International Games Week Berlin” until 2017.

With the aim of initiating and fostering an ongoing exchange between research and practice, the new conceptualized GameCamp Berlin 2018 now also strongly encourages practitioners from the games industry to share their knowledge and come into contact with researchers. Artists of other disciplines who are interested in digital games and game culture as well as all other interested parties are also welcome to join and exchange ideas.

This exchange is encouraged by the BarCamp format: A BarCamp is an open meeting where all participants are allowed and entitled to give a presentation in English or German language. The exact schedule is determined by all participants at the beginning of the event.

As usual with BarCamps, the event is mostly sponsored, which means that the registration fee, which includes food and lodging, can be kept very low. The GameCamp Berlin 2018 is i.a. funded by the “Projekt Zukunft”" of the Berlin Senate and the Stiftung Digitale Spielekultur.

The GameCamp Berlin is organized by the GameCamp Berlin GbR: Florian Berger, Christian Roth, Felix Schröter and Annegret Montag, with the support of Melanie Fritsch. It will take place on September 22ndand 23rd, 2018 at the Youth Hostel “Jugendherberge Berlin Ostkreuz”. The participation fee is 35 €.
